Information on Ayahuasca
Mother Ayahuasca, kwnown under different names in the languages on the town in the Amazon such as Burawehiak (Harakmbut people), Kamarampi (Matsigenka), Oni (Shipibo), Nanten (Shuar) and Nixipae (Cashinahua), is a holy beverage. Not a “hallucinogen”. The mother, doctor and teacher ayahuasca comes from the amazonic jungle, is known and used in an ancestral way by the indigenous amazonic towns; which consider her the spirit of nature. It constitutes the foundation of spirituality, chamanism, traditional medicine, chamanism and indigenous cosmovision. In Brazil is denominated Caapi from which Banisteriopsis, its scientific name, comes name. In Ecuador is called Natema; Yaje in Colombia, in the Andes and the Peruvian is called Ayahuasca.
This word is of Quechua origin and means “rope that unites the world of the living ones with the world of the spirits”. The literal translation would be Aya - Death/ Huasca - Rope or drunkenness, due to the dizziness it causes once one drinks it. According to studies made in the Ecuatorian forest, the use of ayahuasca goes back to approximately 5.000 years; its knowledge survives in the magical - religious therapeutic field of the indigenous towns of the Amazon. Ayahuasca is used to make the connection with magical worlds, in the “expansion of the conscience”, since it has a spirit. Boiled with the leaves of a shrub called Chacruna (Psychotria viridis), to this beverage can also be added toe or datura, tobacco or coca and others. In the western slope of the amazonian river there are 700 different ways of preparing Ayahuasca; every indigenous culture that inhabits this vast territory has its own way of conceiving Ayahuasca.
A sacred origin is given to ayahuasca, as well as to other plants. In some towns the origin is magical, “the story tells that the vine was a man from the sky and chacruna a beautiful woman from the earth, they got married and when dying, swore that together they would always teach and cure the human beings, from their graves the ayahuasca vine (man) and chakruna (woman) grew up. To some towns in the amazon, the ayahuasca vine “is the one that gives strength and chakruna the vision”. The beverage is drunk in purification, learning and healing ceremonies. It is used to purify and to cure the spirit, the body, the mind and the emotions, which it takes us to a magic reality and to the state of superior conscience. Which show us realities that cannot be observed in an ordinary state of mind. Which might be defined as the visible thing of what is invisible and the rational thing of what is irrational. From the connection with the magic and spiritual worlds with which ayahuasca connects us with, conscience of the existence in its real meaning is acquired. It is a subliminal mystical experience, in which the conscious human being can modify the essence of his/her being.

Wanamey Center- tree of life-, is a program of the Cultural Center Wanamey (CECUWA). It works since 1989 thanks to the Healer and Master Huachiperi, Alejandro Jahuanchi “Darikiking”, who founded the Center which purpose is investigate, revalue, conserve and spread the values of the Amazonic traditional medicine. The Center of Traditional Medicine Wanamey offers services of traditional medicine; we are therapist, healers in different fields of the traditional and alternative medicine, or “shamans” who offer treatments and knowledge of the Peruvian Traditional Medicine. Our mission is to contribute with knowledge and solutions to health problems at various levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, without discriminating the achievements of modern medicine Treatments. Our treatments are based in the use of medicinal plants, owners of generous spirits who provide them of healing properties. To call and know those spirits is the beginning of our medicine and the start of a balanced relation with the patient and nature. Therefore, Sacred Plants like Ayahuasca (Mother plant, Doctor and Master), Floripondio or Toe, Tobacco and Coca become of special importance We offer psychomagical treatments for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual disorders: Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual cleaning; purgatives, poultices, liniments, sweat lodge baths with aromatical plants, infusions, brews- Concentration and lineation of internal bodies with ayahuasca ceremonies, purification rituals with tobacco, sun baths, rituals and treatments with the four elements: earth, water, air and fire. Treatment of different diseases with Floripondio or Datura; rituals, psychomagical treatments and shamanic chants (Ícaros). Our treatments can have a duration of eight or more days. Situation The Center of traditional medicine Wanamey is located in a Nature and Ecological Reserve of 50 Ha, in theCultural Area of the Manu´s reserve of Biosphere, Pillcopata, Cusco, Perú, at a height of 700 m over sea level and from 180 km to the city of Cusco (approximately nine hours of travel). The climate is warm and wet, the middle annual temperature is 25º C. The infrastructure of the center is at forest style; we do own bungalows withshared WC; rooms are for three people with indivudual bed and mosquito net. The rooms are over platforms of 60 cm height and have no doors, that is for our energy to flow and connect with Nature. We do also own a ethnobotanical garden. We do ask people for Willpower, Patience, Faith and keeping mind free of prejudices. Other activities: The medicine center Wanamey also offers different activities: shamanism and ayahuasca workshops, spiritual retreats with ayahuasca, personal growth, traditional medicine, seminars, lectures and trips of spiritual growth, individual or for groups. Agriculture- Medicinal Plants: One of our activities consists in supporting the agriculture activities of the center, for example to produce food for everyday´s life. We work with ancient technics of cultivation and mixing Amazonian techniques with agro ecological proposals The main cultivations existing in the center are yuca, mountain potatoe, corn, uncucha, rice, sugar plant and fruit trees (papaya, anona, citrics). Forest trees we have guano, cedar, caoba, pashico, peine de mono, catahua, michiccallo, niro, palo de luna, etc. Our ethnobotanical garden is dedicated to the spreading of information over properties and ways of use of the area´s medicinal plants. We do grow the following species: floripondio, tobacco, coca, chacruna and ayahuasca “bajegpa” (considered as sacred on the Amazonian cosmovision, with spiritual and healing properties), uña de gato, sangre de grado, piri piri, mata palo, sano sano, wuito, santa maría, oje, habashabas, verdolaga, hierba golondrina, pijuayo, matico, yahuar chonca, etc. This pants are used in the treatments and healings we offer in our center. The medicinal center Wanamey was thought from an ayahuasca vision that had Alejandro Jahuanchi, its foundator. In our cosmovision is important the mithic memory and the simbolic aspects that we consider sacred. Every being in nature has an spirit, we all are one; animals, plants and people depend mutually of each other to live in armony. The elements of nature, as water, are not virtues but gifts from the universe.
